Florence Welch

Florence Welch once said “Clothes are my passion and slightly my downfall…” and don’t we just get it!

I was 13 and in my first year of high school when I walked into my older brothers bedroom. He was playing a new CD and I was summoned instantly. Im not too ashamed to admit that I owe the devotion I have to most of my favourite artists, to my brother James. He was the gateway to Florence and the Machine, Lana Del Rey, Lorde and so many others.

From the moment I heard Florence’s bewitching and ethereal voice I was captivated. A lifelong love affair with the emotional depth of each and every song was born and has stayed with me since.

Her songs feel like a personal diary entry, finding the middle ground between mysticism, happiness, divine intervention and depression. Florence’s fashion in her music videos and personal style, to me, is as equally important and impactful as her music. Florence’s style in the early 2010’s was very 1920- 1930’s, ArtDeco inspired, if you will. Moving towards a paisley-clad bohemian style from 2015 onwards. Florence’s fashion is unique, eclectic and vintage. There is never a scarcity of flared jeans, deep and richly coloured velvet blazers, alongside leather jackets styled over floral prairie dresses. To me, this combines a mythical wonder with an alternate rockstar aesthetic. Being eclectic and ever-so tailored, also has an enchanting way of merging traditionally “masculine” and traditionally “feminine” silhouettes and pieces, acting as a portal through which fashion transcends gender. Florence has described her own sense of style as “Renaissance pirate” and i think this fits the aesthetic rather perfectly.

Florence has developed an enchanting relationship with the creative director of Gucci, Alessandro Michelle, who in my opinion has used both Florence’s music and personal style as inspiration for his collections (I might dive a little deeper into this in another blog post). Alessandro also designed Florence’s whimsical stage outfits for her High as Hope tour, as well as many of her red carpet looks.

Now on to Florence’s relationship with The Vampires Wife, thats right I’ve saved the best ‘till last. If you are a devotee of either Florence Welch or The Vampires Wife, you know it to be nearly impossible to think of one without the other. Florence often wears clothing by The Vampires Wife, as the brand embodies all things elegant, feminine and has the striking allure of folk tales… sound familiar? Florence has been quoted saying “It’s so beautiful to see the muse become the maker” and “There’s a subversive femininity to her creations that really speaks to me” when chatting about Susie Cave and The Vampires Wife. Im not entirely sure that I can put into words how it feels when your muse’s lives intertwine, social media acts as a crystal~ball providing little glimpses in to their lives, proving that we are all interwoven in some way. Whether it be through fashion, music or the human experience.

And lastly I will leave you with this gift ~ www.instagram.com/whatisflorencewearing ~ if you, not unlike me, wish to see where Florence sources all of her beautiful garments, accessories and jewellery.

With love,

Georgia xx
